The Perception Types of Social Workers on the Independent Living of People with Developmental Disabilities: A Q Study

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to grasp the subjective perception of social workers on the independent living of development disabled people and analyze the characteristics of each types. The Q-methodology was used to achieve the purpose of this study. The result of Q-sort with 35 statements targeting 26 social workers showed that there were 5 types. Type 1 perceived that the independent living of the person with developmental disabilities is a fundamental right to realize values based on human dignity and is called ¡®universal-imperative guarantee type¡¯. Type 2 is named ¡®restrictive-passive guarantee type¡¯ because it is perceived that the independent living of the person with developmental disabilities should be respected in processing of social services. Type 3 refers to ¡®implemental, guarantee-subject enlargement type¡¯, social woker should be pursuit enlarging of independent living of the person with developmental disabilities. Type 4 ¡®independent, opportunity-centered guarantee type that the person, who emphasizes the role of advocator and independent role of the person with developmental disabilities. On the basis of study result, it was discussed with commonness and discrimination of each other and pointed out some implications.
